FAQs

Although we are always on hand to answer any questions you may have, here are some of our most frequently asked questions about Kent Dance and how we work. If you have suggestions to add to this page, drop us a message!

What styles do you do?

You can find a list of our competitive and our class styles here! We always offer Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Contemporary and Hip-Hop. Other styles we also often have are Bollywood and Irish!

Do I have to have a gym membership to join Kent dance?

No! One of the many things we pride ourselves on is that no one needs a gym membership to join Kent Dance. The only payments you have to make are for a Class Card and Membership. You can find these here.

Can boys join?

Absolutely! Even though it may be that more girls join than boys, all genders can join and do any style of dance they wish - competition or non-competition.

I want to join Kent Dance, but what do I need to buy?

To be a part of KD you will need to purchase a membership and the relevant class card. We suggest you do not buy the class card if you are auditioning for a squad until after auditions. For a breakdown of our memberships, click here.

What should I wear to classes/rehearsals/auditions? Is there a uniform?

Wear whatever you are comfortable in. Most of our dancers wear leggings and a comfy T-shirt. We would advise bringing a leotard to uni as we often wear these under costumes for styles like Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary.

At auditions, we advise you to wear something colourful that will make you stand out rather than all black. If you are auditioning for Ballet or Tap you will also need the relevant shoes for the style. Otherwise what you wear is completely up to you - whether you feel you perform better in a leotard and tights or you feel more comfortable in leggings and a T-shirt, wear what you want!

We don't have a 'uniform' but we offer lots of merchandise with our logo, and these orders are taken after auditions and then again in January time. It is compulsory for our competition dancers to have a KD T-shirt for comps, but often all of our dancers love to have a bit of KD merch!

Are the welcome/enrolment socials scary?

Not at all! These are not sport initiations. The welcome social is a great introduction to Kent Dance where you can meet some of our freshers and our returners, and get to know a bit more about the society. The enrolment social is simply a fun social where we dress up differently depending on if we are committee, freshers or returners. No one is forced to do anything they don't want to do and there will always be options to each game. The aim is to meet new people and make new dance friends.

I study at the University of Kent on the Medway campus, can I still join?

Absolutely! We have had Medway students before as part of KD and even on the committee. The only thing to bear in mind is our rehearsals are weekday evenings and sometimes weekends so you'll have to factor in the journey to Canterbury.

I'm an Erasmus student/on an international programme, can I join too?

Of course! You can take classes just like everyone else. If you are here for only one term, unfortunately you cannot compete with us on a competition squad because rehearsals happen all year round from September to March. We also have cheaper memberships for those here for just a term - check out the "Join Us" page for more or email us.

Do I have to compete?/Can I just dance for fun?

There is no pressure to audition for our competitive squads. Anyone can join our weekly classes where you learn dances for our shows, or if you don't want to compete, you can dance at our workshops or technique classes.

How often are rehearsals and how much commitment is a competition squad?

Competition squads rehearse at least once a week, more if it is the week before competitions. Throughout the term there will also be very occasional weekend rehearsals - all of which you will receive the timetable for weeks in advance. If you audition and are successful, you are expected to attend every rehearsal unless you let the choreographer know in advance with good reason/illness. This is because time is limited and choreographers put a lot of time and effort into their routines. You will be expected to balance academic work with rehearsal time, but we will support you in doing this.

If I'm not part of a comp squad am I still able to perform?

Of course! Most weekly classes will be performing in the November/December show, Fusion. There is also our annual show in March/April which is a chance not only to choreograph but to sign up for any dance you fancy. Fusion and Annual Show are good chances to try out new styles.

How much will it cost to be in a competition squad?

The total cost for competition squad members vary depending on which squads you are in. Everyone pays the same membership and classcard cost, however, for every squad you are in you will have to buy the costume. Each choreographer has a budget of  £15 per routine per dancer maximum. The cost to attend competitions also vary but on average a dancer who attends a regional comp (a day) plus Loughborough (a weekend) would total around £170. Please do bear in mind you are never required to pay this much money upfront. We always create small instalment payments and these coincide with student loans. If you need help, you can always speak to our Treasurer.

I am concerned about / currently struggling with dance costs. Who should I speak to and is there help?

The perfect person to speak to about anything financial is our Treasurer. The best option would be to message her/email us to discuss your situation further so she can help you. Kent Union also open applications for the 'Access to Activities Fund'. This fund is there to help society members to pay for things like memberships and, specifically in our case, competitions and costumes. Kent Dance can not apply for it on behalf of members but we will of course advertise it when it's open later this year.
